It may seem like I’m just clowning around at the end of my leg workout but I’m actually doing a crucial part of my leg rehabilitation called proprioceptive training.
What is proprioception?
It is the sense that let’s us perceive the location, movement, and action of parts of the body. It encompasses a complex of sensations, including perception of joint position and movement muscle force and action.
To put it simply, this type of exercise improves balance and the way your body reacts to changes in surfaces, terrain, or external forces.
This is extremely important in the rehabilitation process. After your body sustains an injury, it can actually “forget” how to react to those changes in joint positions and surfaces which can lead to a re-injury.
